How Age Difference Is Calculated
The age gap between two people is simply the distance between their two dates of birth. Instead of subtracting birth years, which is where most people go wrong, this calculator compares the full calendar dates.
Age Difference = Later Date of Birth − Earlier Date of Birth
Counted in real calendar days, so leap years and unequal month lengths are handled correctly.
Why subtracting birth years gives the wrong answer
Two people born in 1998 and 2000 are not automatically 2 years apart. If one was born in December 1998 and the other in January 2000, the real gap is about 1 year and 1 month. Only a full-date calculation gives the exact figure.

How do I calculate the age difference between two people?
Enter both dates of birth and the calculator finds the gap in years, months and days, plus the total number of days. It works out which person is older automatically, so the order you enter the dates in does not matter.
What is a normal age difference between partners?
There is no single normal. Surveys across many countries typically find a gap of 2 to 4 years between partners, but larger and smaller gaps are common and perfectly ordinary. Compatibility depends far more on life stage and shared goals than on the number itself.
How do I calculate the age gap between siblings?
Use the same two date fields: enter the older sibling's date of birth and the younger sibling's date of birth. The result shows the exact gap in years, months and days, which is useful for school admission planning and family records.
Does this calculator account for leap years?
Yes. The calculation uses real calendar dates, so 29 February and varying month lengths are handled correctly. That is why the day count can differ slightly from a simple multiplication by 365.
