How Age Difference Is Calculated
The age gap between two people is simply the distance between their two dates of birth. Instead of subtracting birth years, which is where most people go wrong, this calculator compares the full calendar dates.
Why subtracting birth years gives the wrong answer
Two people born in 1998 and 2000 are not automatically 2 years apart. If one was born in December 1998 and the other in January 2000, the real gap is about 1 year and 1 month. Only a full-date calculation gives the exact figure.
| Person A (DOB) | Person B (DOB) | Year Subtraction | Actual Gap |
|---|---|---|---|
| 15 Dec 1998 | 10 Jan 2000 | 2 years | 1 yr, 0 mo, 26 d |
| 1 Jan 1995 | 31 Dec 1995 | 0 years | 0 yr, 11 mo, 30 d |
| 20 Mar 1990 | 20 Mar 1996 | 6 years | 6 yr, 0 mo, 0 d |

When People Look Up an Age Gap
- Couples and relationships — checking the exact gap between partners rather than a rough estimate.
- Siblings — parents planning school admissions often need the gap in years and months.
- Twins and newborns — gaps of minutes, hours or days matter, so the total-days figure is the useful one.
- Forms and official records — some applications ask for the difference in completed years between family members.
- Classmates and colleagues — comparing dates of birth for seniority or eligibility cut-offs.
Age difference vs age
An age difference is fixed for life. If two people are 3 years and 2 months apart at birth, they stay 3 years and 2 months apart forever. Your age, by contrast, changes every day. If you want your own current age instead of a gap, use the Age Calculator, which also shows your next birthday countdown.
