How to convert CGPA to percentage

Updated: 28 October 2026

CGPA (Cumulative Grade Point Average) is the average of your grade points across all subjects or semesters, usually on a 10-point scale. There is no single conversion that works everywhere: each board or university decides how a CGPA maps to a percentage. Use the rule your institution publishes.

CBSE: multiply by 9.5

Percentage = CGPA ร— 9.5

CBSE introduced the 9.5 factor for the CGPA (CCE) system. It came from the average marks of students who scored a perfect 10 CGPA in earlier years, so it is an indicative figure rather than an exact one. A CGPA of 8.6 gives 8.6 ร— 9.5 = 81.7%.

If your university is not listed, look at the back of your marksheet or the academic regulations on the university website. Most give the formula in the form (CGPA โˆ’ a) ร— b, which you can enter using the Custom option above.

Percentage to CGPA

To go the other way, reverse the formula. Under the CBSE rule, CGPA = Percentage รท 9.5, so 76% is 8.0 CGPA. For VTU, CGPA = Percentage รท 10 + 0.75. Switch the calculator to Percentage โ†’ CGPA and it does this for whichever rule you pick.
