How is the GDS merit percentage calculated?
India Post GDS (Gramin Dak Sevak) selection has no written exam or interview. An automated merit list is prepared from your Class 10 marks, converted to a percentage and taken to four decimal places. Marks from Class 12 or graduation carry no extra weight.
Example: 462 marks out of 500 gives 462 ÷ 500 × 100 = 92.4000%.
If your board gives grades or CGPA
Where a board awards grade points instead of marks, the conversion used for GDS is Marks = Grade Point × 9.5. So a CGPA of 9.2 works out to 9.2 × 9.5 = 87.4000%. Switch to the "Grade points / CGPA" tab above to try it.
Circle-wise and category-wise merit
You compete within the postal circle you applied to, and each circle prepares separate lists for categories such as UR, OBC, EWS, SC, ST and PwBD. That is why the same percentage can be safe in one circle and short in another. The optional cut-off box lets you compare your result with last year's figure for your circle and category.
Tips before you apply
- Use the total exactly as printed on your Class 10 marksheet, and read the current notification for how additional or optional subjects are treated.
- Check that you studied Mathematics and English (as required) and know the local language of the circle.
- Keep documents ready, as shortlisted candidates go through document verification.

Why does the GDS percentage use four decimal places?
The merit list ranks candidates on the percentage to four decimals, so two candidates separated by a tiny fraction of a mark can be ranked differently. Age is used when the percentage is exactly equal.
Is this GDS percentage calculator official?
No. It is an unofficial estimate. The merit list published by India Post is final.
